Giselle O. Alvarez is a Cuban American storyteller who's passion for dance began at age 3. Born to immigrant parents in Miami Florida, she was lucky to be trained in a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, flamenco, and salsa. At 12, she decided to focus on ballet and honed her craft at Miami City Ballet School and by 15, she began performing with the professional company locally and on tour. At 17 she won a Level 1 in Ballet from National YoungArts and was nominated as a Presidential Scholar of the Arts.
After graduating high school with a Diploma of Distinction, she joined the Carolina Ballet as an apprentice and after, The Washington Ballet Studio Company, all while having second jobs in retail and hospitality to supplement her income. At 21, she was offered a job with CityDance Ensemble, a repertory dance company, which expanded her artistry and skills as a professional contemporary modern dancer. There she was sponsored by the US State Department as a Cultural Ambassador to perform internationally and teach dance classes to local communities in Algeria, Bahrain, Belarus, Chile, Israel, Jordan, Kazakstan, Palestine, Peru, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates. During her tenure, she was featured in works by Paul Taylor, Kate Weare, Rachel Erdos, and Christopher K. Morgan among others.
At 25, she moved to NYC, and spent 3 years auditioning and doing short dance gigs, all while waiting tables in Soho. One highlight was being apart of the creation process of "In the Cold Room" with long time friend and mentor Christopher K. Morgan. Being in a collaborative environment of generosity and curiosity during creation became an important value to the work Giselle chooses, and she continued to seek that kind of work when returning to NYC. Six months later while at a work study shift at Steps on Broadway, she received a phone call that changed her life forever. In February of 2015 she joined the Broadway Company of the Phantom of the Opera and made her Broadway Debut. She continues to perform at the Majestic Theatre 8 shows a week, featured as the Monkey in the opening number of Act 2 Masquerade. Giselle has also been able to join other productions for a short time, which include the Encores production of Brigadoon at New York City Center and at Theatre Under the Stars' production of Jerome Robbins' Broadway, featured as Maria.
During the pandemic, Giselle decided to continue her curiosity in all things theatre by enrolling in virtual classes at Jen Waldman Studio. She was able to continue to work on singing and acting but more importantly connected to a beautiful community who shared her values. She has also started studying On Camera Acting with Jamie Carroll, learning the nuance of on camera work in hopes of pursuing more opportunities in that field. When she isn't dancing, singing or acting, she is passionately contemplating her next meal.
